Photographs. Unfiltered.

I photograph because I like remembering things I've seen and places I've been. For many, cell phones have become the only photographic instrument, and as a result photos have become only a temporary stimulant, never to be viewed again. I've forced myself to continue to use a 'real' camera to document the moments that really matter to me.

This site is a way to share some of those images with my website visitors. It's my online presence as a photographer, and I have the chosen the moments I wish others to appreciate.

How I work

I've taken photographs for 40+ years. I started with a manual SLR, and over time grew my collection to include top end Nikon cameras and their best lenses. My equipment filled many cupboards, and preparing for a shoot was becoming more and more like a military exercise. The weight was excessive, and whilst the gear was perfect for 'dedicated' photography trips, I found myself traveling without a camera more often than not.

In the early 2010s I decided to change that. I replaced my heavy Nikon gear with Leica rangefinders - first a full manual Leica M6 film camera, but followed quickly with digital rangefinders. This change slowed me down. The camera became immediately more portable, whilst the technical quality of the images I made remained high. I lost autofocus, auto exposure, the ability to shoot 11+ frames per second, but gained the time to think and photograph with purpose.

Nowadays when I travel, it's mostly a single camera - currently the M11 - and a single lens. I'm shooting available light, and my feet are the zoom lens. Working within a fixed setup removes a whole category of decision from the moment a photograph is actually there, and what's left is a much simpler question: stand here, or stand somewhere else.

About this site

Everything is arranged so the photographs carry the page and the interface stays quiet. The selection on the home page is shuffled in your browser each time you load it, so a second visit shows you a different set rather than the same greatest hits in the same order.

The galleries are sorted by subject rather than by date, because that's how I go looking for things. A frame can sit in more than one of them — a shot from a trip can be travel and wildlife at once, and forcing it into a single bucket never made the archive easier to use.

The journal is where the longer thoughts go — gear I've kept, gear I got rid of, trips, and the occasional argument with myself about whether any of it matters.
